Abstract:
An adaptive compression technique has been developed to enable high-resolution streaming of continuous point-on-wave data of the power grid measurements using the existing infrastructure of wide-area monitoring systems (WAMS). This technique allows monitoring transient instabilities and fast-timescale anomalies that current methods cannot detect and report.
Technology Overview:
Large-scale integration of inverter-based renewable resources has resulted in increasing outages in power systems caused by fast timescale anomalies such as frequency excursion, transient instability, and voltage collapse. The state-of-the-art synchrophasor measurement unit (PMU) technology has limited coverage. The data resolution at less than 240 frames per second is inadequate to address power electronics-induced fast signal dynamics. Existing fast-timescale high-resolution measurements within the monitoring and protection systems are only used for offline post-event analysis. Researchers at Cornell University have devised a novel data compression technique that enables real-time streaming of high-resolution continuous point-on-wave (CPOW) samples at the rate of up to 200 kilo-Hertz within the existing infrastructure of wide-area monitoring systems. As the first technique for compressing high-resolution CPOW measurements, the developed adaptive subband compression (ASBC) technology provides a 100:1 to 1000:1 compression ratio. ASBC employs low-cost filter-banks that decompose measurement data streams based on the harmonic structure of the signal waveforms and adaptively compress individual harmonic components. A prototype implementation of ASBC offers a 40-50 dB improvement in the rate-distortion performance metric.
Advantages:
- Real-time situational awareness at the millisecond timescale and enhanced network resilience.
- High-fidelity and high-resolution data-streaming with existing WAMS infrastructure.
Potential Applications:
- Upgrade existing phasor measurement units.
- Monitoring the fast dynamics of a power system.
- Coordinated protection relay
