Traveling Waves for Reducing/Removing Shocks from Flow

  • Used to remove/reduce shock around supersonic vehicles
  • Remove/reduce shock of inlet and outlet of jet engines

Shocks are typically not desired during supersonic flight or jet engines because of aerodynamic losses, sonic boom, high stress on the structure, etc. It is desired to eliminate shock in/around supersonic flows.

Surface motion in the form of traveling waves is shown to remove/reduce shocks in a supersonic flow. The idea is to remove/reduce unwanted shocks using surface actuation in the form of traveling waves.
