Steel jackets support the decks of oil, gas, and wind turbine platforms. These jackets are composed of tubular steel members for support and cement grouted piles, driven or drilled directly into the seabed. Physical inspections are essential to identify cracks, corrosion, erosion, material/metal fatigue, pitting, marine growth, and other conditions which may cause member failure, deterioration, and reduced service life.
There are limited predictive models for evaluating the structural integrity of offshore jackets. Hence, researchers at Florida Atlantic University have developed a deterioration model for estimating the remaining service life. It utilizes Monte Carlo simulations with established corrosion models to predict the time-dependent deterioration of jacket legs/piles and structural horizontal and vertical bracings.
