Salmonella bacterial infections, primarily from poultry products, cause as many as 131.6 million cases worldwide each year and upwards of 302,000 deaths. In the United States, Salmonella infections are the lead foodborne pathogen and cost more than $4 billion annually.
This technology employs state-of-the-art Real-Time PCR which uses short pieces of single-stranded DNA synthetically manufactured to exact compliment known sequences of DNA uniquely specific to each Salmonella serotype. The specificity and sensitivity of this technology can distinguish between closely related serotypes from only a few contaminating Salmonella cells in a test sample. Different fluorescent dyes are utilized in Real-Time PCR so that detection of different Salmonella serotypes can be automated using sensitive optical readers and results can be obtained in a few hours.
