Abstract:

Our technique allows to measure the contact force between an optical heart rate sensor and a user's skin. This is achieved by analysing the artefacts in the raw optical heart rate sensor measurements. Avoiding subjective tightness recommendations offered by device manufacturers, this technique provides an objective source of information from which a system can make recommendations on how tighter or looser a device should be worn for optimal physiological sensing abilities. The technique has applications in both consumer wearables and medical sensors.
