Abstract

This invention describes an embodiment for an electrochemical energy storage system based on a calcium metal battery. This invention entails a rechargeable calcium battery that employs (1) a calcium metal anode with (2) a composite carbon/sulfur (C/S), metal oxide, or metal sulfide cathode and (3) a multi-component electrolyte containing a mixture of different salts.

Advantages

A calcium metal battery is a new, sustainable, and low-cost alternative to both Li-ion and Li metal batteries. It can provide similar storage capacity, energydensity, and power output, but at a fraction of the cost, as well as low price performance ($/kWh). This means that the cost of battery packs could dropsignificantly. Calcium is also domestically sourced in the United States, which also holds most of the world’s reserves. Hence, from a sourcing standpoint, theabundant amount of calcium can supply the USA’s national battery manufacturing industry. This technology will ensure sustainable and abundant supply of source materials to supply to every growing energy storage needs of society.

Potential Applications

Calcium batteries are promising candidates for stationary energystorage to support the energy grid, as well as green energy conversion technologies such as solar and wind, which Li-ion has not been able to do at below$150/kWh.
