Abstract

Background

Retrograde intramedullary (IM) nails, which are inserted distally, are easier to insert and are better for obese and polytrauma patients. However, they cannot treat fractures in the proximal area of the bone. Antegrade IM nails are better for treating proximal, femoral neck, and intertrochanteric fractures, but they take longer to place and are contraindicated in certain patients (obese and polytrauma patients). Also, antegrade nails cannot treat fractures in the distal shift region.

Technology Overview

This invention may be placed in a retrograde manner, but is able to secure the femoral neck and intertrancheric region, unlike other retrograde nails. It is suitable for treating all femoral fractures regardless of location and has an outrigger that may be secured to either the proximal or distal end of the nail that allowing for targeted placement of screws to secure the nail. In addition, it has multiple transverse and oblique-facing sockets for receiving screws, bolts, and other objects to provide increased stability.
