Abstract:

As consumer expectations for signal quality and data transfer capabilities rise, so does the demand for transition into next-generation mobile communication (5G). Currently, the number of mobile subscriptions worldwide exceeds the global population, and it’s projected to approach 8.8 billion by 20241. In order to facilitate the transition into 5G, advances in antenna technology are required to improve lossy signals and poor bandwidth. Presently, millimeter-wave antennas are considered to be a vital breakthrough technology for 5G implementation due to their large bandwidth. Presented here is a dual-band, dual-polarization millimeter-wave antenna array that can simultaneously cover the 28 and 38 GHz, frequency bands. In addition, its radiation beam direction can be manipulated for optimal control. The design is planar, compact and easily integrated with other chips for a working system. Lastly, the dual-polarization functionality will minimize losses due to polarization mismatch errors during signal transmission and reception. This design will broadly impact the wireless communication industries, including mobile devices, the internet of things, and transportation.
